DAPHNE, Ala. — The wins and winds blew predominantly in the Pirates favor as Fairhope tennis teams swept the Daphne Trojans at Lake Forest Tuesday in a 6A Area 3 matchup. The Pirates improved to 8-2 on the season while the Trojans fell to 3-4 as both schools wrap up the regular season next week.

The visiting Pirates won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles for an 8-1 win as gusty winds and rain moved in.

J. T. Knodel, Phillip Wyatt, Agee Adams, Drew Rush and Michael Tran took wins in the No. 1 through No. 5 singles for Fairhope. Andre Li took the sole win for Daphne in the No. 6 match.

In doubles, the teams of Matt Von Zimmerman and Adams (No.1), of Wyatt and Rush (No.2) and of Tran and Baker (No. 3) completed the three-match sweep.

In the ladies division, Fairhope won 8-1 and improved to 6-2 overall. Daphne's girls are 5-2 with their only losses to the Lady Pirates.

DHS junior Meredith Gwin kept her No. 3-singles win streak alive at 7-0 with an 8-5 victory.

Monica Mitta and Lexi Elwell won their No. 1 and No. 2 spots for FHS while Marina Von Zimmerman, Caroline White and Brooke Dotson claimed wins at No. 4, 5 and 6.

The No. 2 battle between Elwell and Daphne left hander Lizzie Schmidt proved to be the most evenly matched of the day going 16 games before the FHS right hander won 9-7. The two are now 1-1 on the year in head-to-head matches and may meet again in the section tournament at Spirit Park which begins next Wednesday. Sweeping the doubles format for the Lady Pirates were the teams of Mitta and Elwell, Von Zimmerman and Kasey Walsh and of Adams and Glover.

The No. 2 match between Von Zimmerman/Walsh and Gwin/Taylor Lewis was the most competitive finishing 8-6 FHS.
