Childress struck out eight in the opener and Faust struck out five in the nightcap to close out the series for the Pirates (30-8), who will play the winner of the Auburn-Smith’s Station series next Friday in the third round.

“They are both going to be Division 1 pitchers one day,” Fairhope head coach Stu Fuller said of Faust and Childress. “They have been our guys all year. They haven’t been our only guys, but both of those guys are hard to hit when they are on.”

Fairhope defeated Auburn 10-3 in early March but has not played Smith’s Station this season. If Auburn wins the Pirates will travel. If Smith’s Station wins the Pirates will host.

“We are just happy to be moving on to the next round,” he said. “Foley was so much improved from the time we saw them earlier in the season. Coach (Steve) Garrett and his staff have done a great job, they had a fine ballclub.”

GAME 1: Corey Childress struck out eight and gave up just one run as the Pirates beat the Foley Lions 6-1 in the first game of a Class 6A baseball playoff double header on Friday.

Fairhope broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with runs on singles from Cole Wainright and Sam Sundbeck. The Pirates also scored on a Foley throwing error and took a 4-1 lead into the fifth. The Pirates added two more runs in the sixth on RBI doubles from Sundbeck and Hunter Ellenburg. Fairhope’s first run came in the third off a Jerrod Hathcock hit to the fence.

Foley’s run came in the top of the fourth after one of Fairhope’s four errors in the game. Zach Melton took the loss in a complete game effort.

GAME 2: Beecher Faust struck out five in a complete game, 3-1 win for the Pirates against the Lions. In the top of the third Hunter Ellenburg put the Pirates up 1-0 with an RBI single and Fairhope added a run after a wild pitch to lead 2-0. Foley responded with an RBI double from Bryce Guery in the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1. In the sixth, Faust’s RBI double down the third base line gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth Faust caught a Stormm Garrett bunt in the air for an out then threw to second and caught Patrick Grumbley off the bag for a double play. He struck out Guery two batters later to end the inning.

Brax Garrett had eight strikeouts in a complete game for the Lions, who finish the season with a 27-13 record.
