Fairhope wins BayBears Classic title

MOBILE, Ala. — The Fairhope Pirates won the big trophy again at “The Hank” Saturday night.

The 14th BayBears Hank Aaron Classic title came back across the Bay to Fairhope for the third-straight year and to a Baldwin County school for the eighth time.

Righthander Hunter Ellenberg not only went the distance to win the 10-run, six-inning, no-hitter over Alma Bryant's Hurricanes, he closed the Pirates’ semi-final with a 10-8 save over Baldwin County High that afternoon.

In the final, the sophomore struck out four with two walks, singled in Robert Baugh and later singled to reach and score via courtesy runner Cole Wainwright.

He won the Larry Andrews Pitcher Award named in memory of the late Baker baseball coach and given to the top pitcher of the tournament.

Senior Pirate catcher Evan East was named the Jake Peavy MVP. The award is named for the award winning Major League pitcher and Mobile native who played for St. Paul’s Episcopal and the BayBears.

FHS junior Toby Thomas received the Chris Boyett Silver Slugger Award given to the top offensive player each year. The award is named in memory of the Fairhope High School All-American, Faulkner State and University of South Alabama star who died in an auto accident before completing his college career.

Thomas drove in three runs in the final, a single to score Wes Kent in the third inning and a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to score Wainwright and Brock Gilheart.

Leading 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, Ellenberg led off with a single to start the four-run, game-ending rally. Gilheart followed with a single, Kent then doubled in Wainwright and Gilheart to make it 8-0. East drew a walk, Chase Domino — who won the Andrews award last year — drew a hit-by-pitch, and Peyton Fuller connected to score Kent on a fielder’s choice and Beecher Faust, running for East, who would score the winning and final run from second base.

“It was truly a team effort,” said Pirates coach Stu Fuller. “We had some guys win awards and well deserved. But, man, we don't win without guys like Robert Baugh and Wes Kent, Justin Hathcock, Peyton’s two wins, Ethan Hunt's one hitter, Gilheart. It was just good solid play by everyone all week. Hunter was just excellent in the championship game. I thought we had players step up all day. I'm proud of them. They worked hard in the off season and we're off to a good start. We just want to build on each success and keep it going.”

Defensively in the final, Baugh in right field and Hathcock in left, made spectacular catches. Infield play was led by Kent at short, Gilheart at first with Fuller and Thomas at second and Sam Kent at third made run-saving plays to preserve the shutout.

The Pirates finished the tournament 5-0 surviving a ferocious comeback in the semifinal against the Baldwin County Tigers in the final inning. The 10-8 win advanced them to the final against the Hurricanes who defeated Robertsdale 7-4 in the other semi on a two-out, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh by Tyler Mason.

Fairhope will play St. Patrick's and Poplarville March 4-5 at Petal High in Petal, Miss.
