FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope High Pirates kept their undefeated status intact early this week.
The FHS baseball team opened the Alabama-Oklahoma Challenge at Volanta Park on Monday with a 9-0 shutout over Satsuma to go 10-0 and continued Tuesday with an 11-0 shutdown of Duncan, Okla., to improve to 11-0 on the season.
The Pirates were set to meet Theodore on Wednesday to vie for a spot at the championship Thursday. Final results will be posted in the next edition.
In the opener, Toby Thomas got the win with a one-hit complete game. The right hander struck out seven and walked two to earn his second victory.
“I thought Toby was outstanding today,” said FHS coach Stu Fuller. “That is only one hit in his last 14 innings. He got a no-decision in the first McGill game. He has done a great job.”
Fuller said the bats were supportive giving Thomas a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
“Satsuma has a very good club. We just had one of those nights where we barreled up quite a bit. Our swings were better tonight and they were much better in batting practice today. It is good to see us swing the bats and get back on track again.”
Wes Kent got it started with a lead-off solo shot to the picnic tables behind the left-field wall. Thomas singled and Peyton Fuller drove him in to make it 2-0. Robert Baugh drove in Chase Domino on a fielders choice and Brock Gilheart sent a two-run homer into the oak tree above the left-field picnic tables.
The Pirates put three more runs up in the third inning when Domino led off with a solo homer, Fuller tripled to right and scored on a deep SAC-fly by Gilheart. Sam Kent singled between walks to Baugh and Hunter Ellenberg. Thomas then worked a bases-loaded walk to make it 8-0.
The final run came in the fifth when Sam Kent doubled to start the inning, made third on an Ellenberg SAC-fly and scored on an RBI single by Wes Kent.
In the win over Duncan, Quint Fields got his first win with seven strike outs and four scattered hits for the shutout. Domino and Wes Kent led Fairhope at the plate with three hits and two RBIs each.
