FAIRHOPE, Ala. - The inaugural Mystery Dinner Theatre hosted by The Guardians of Children’s Hospital of Alabama will take place at the Fairhope Yacht Club on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m.
"We’re excited about this event and really looking forward to hosting," stated Kerrie Benson of Children’s Hospital in a news release. "We think this will be something truly unique for bay area residents to enjoy, and of course a great way to support area children in the process."
The evening will begin with dinner at 7 p.m. and a cash bar. After dinner a special performance will be given by the theatrical group The La Luna Players, who will perform a comedic murder mystery.
The Guardians are named in honor of the "Guardian," a boat that protects other boats during regattas at the Fairhope Yacht Club, Benson stated. The name "Guardian" seemed fitting for this group of about eight people, formed out of the Club, wanting to guard and protect the children of Alabama, she stated.
All members of The Guardians have in some way been touched by Children’s Hospital, and the formation of this group is their way of raising awareness and giving back, according to the news release.
This event is inspired by Katie Hamlin of Daphne, a Children’s Hospital patient, who became sick after her sophomore year at Daphne High School and spent eight months at Children’s suffering from a collapsed lung, multiple strokes and remained in a coma for most of her stay. Today, she is back in Baldwin County playing soccer, attending art classes and living every day to the fullest, the release stated.
Katie will be attending the Dinner Theatre as the guest of honor.
In 2009, Children’s Hospital saw patients from every county in Alabama, including 1,500 from Mobile and Baldwin counties alone, the release stated.
“The goal of this event is to raise money and awareness for Children’s so it can conduct the research necessary to continue producing results like Katie’s,” Benson stated.
Tickets are $50 per person and the event is open to the public.
