Fall Plant Sale at South Baldwin Center for Technology

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. - If you missed out on the Annual Fall Plant Sale held last Thursday and Friday, October 14 and 15 at the South Baldwin Center for Technology in Robertsdale, there is still a chance to get some good deals this week.

Agriscience teacher Jeff Kelley said they still have some plants and vegetable left and will be having a clearance sale this week during school hours 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A wide variety of annuals including pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, ornamental kale and petunias, perennials including gallon size and three gallon size blueberries and blackberries and crepe myrtles are available. Vegetables including cabbage, cauliflower, collards, brussel sprouts, kale and broccoli are available.

“We had a real good turnout and made about $3,500 over the two days. And all the money we make goes toward buying plants, seeds, soil, fertilizer and pots for the Spring Sale. Whatever is left over will go back into the program,” Kelley said.

With around 45-50 kids in his Greenhouse Management and Horticulture classes, Kelly said they are learning about what it takes to grow good hearty plants and vegetables.

“All our flowers, plants and vegetables are tough and we have about ten different varieties of tomatoes we are growing from seeds. They are born and raised in Robertsdale and go through all the weather changes and have to be tough to survive teenagers handling them. They are our biggest seller because we baby them and make sure they stay healthy,” Kelley said.

Teachers seem to be buying the most but Kelley said companies buy a lot too. “I send out fliers to all the area City landscape departments and we get a lot of business from Fairhope, Foley and Robertsdale. Everyone seems real pleased with what we have to offer.”

Emily Taylor and Sophia Blair, both juniors in Mr. Kelley’s class and helping with the sale said they really enjoy working in the garden and helping with the plants.

“Mr. Kelley is really cool and funny and we really like his class. We want to come back next year too,” said Taylor and Blair.
