ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — According to police reports, Pamela Cowan, 42, was shot in the chest by her husband, James Brostrom Cowan Jr., 39, last week.
According to Charlie Wilson of Loxley, Pamela’s father, she is going to be all right, and a fund, the Pamela Cowan Fund, has been established at Wachovia Bank to help her with her medical and other expenses. Donations to the fund can be made at any Wachovia bank.
“All her medical expenses are unreal, especially that helicopter ride,” said Wilson in a telephone interview, speaking of the emergency flight that whisked his daughter to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. She underwent hours of surgery to remove fragments of her ribs, which were shattered by the gunshot.
Wilson says that doctors have told him she will leave the hospital with a bone fragment lodged in her heart.
In addition, Wilson added that being hospitalized put his daughter “behind on her personal bills.”
Wilson is not sure exactly when Pamela can leave the hospital.
“Her lungs are still draining, and they want that cleared up before she goes home,” said Wilson.
In addition to the medical expenses, Wilson says Pamela “lost everything” in the Dec. 23 incident.
“She can’t go back,” said Wilson. “Everything was doused with gasoline.”
The Baldwin County Sheriffs Office says that after James shot Pamela, James piled flammable items around her as she lay on their bed and then poured gasoline on her and throughout their Rosinton home. When sheriffs deputies arrived, James retreated to the bedroom with Pamela, placing his gun on the bed while he barricaded himself in the room.
According to police reports, Pamela picked up the .357-caliber handgun and fired at James, striking him in the head.
At this time, the Sheriff’s office has indicated that no charges would be filed against Pamela.
James was flown to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, where he was pronounced dead.
