James Edwin “Jim” Fargason, a native of Georgia and resident of Laurel, Mississippi died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at home.

Known as a gentleman in every respect, he loved good clothes, good living, good manners and good friends.  His many interests were varied and included a great love of sports which he enjoyed as both a participant and spectator.  He also was an avid gardener, traveler, and crossword puzzle addict.  He was genuinely enthused by all that life had to offer.

He was born in Georgia on April 22, 1918 and his primary education was in the public schools of Atlanta. He completed his pre-college education at Young Harris Academy in 1935 and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1939.

He was commissioned as a naval officer in 1942 and attended Harvard Business School. The remainder of his naval career was in San Francisco on staff of the Commander, Western Sea Frontier.

He spent many years with the Coca Cola Company and subsequently moved to Laurel in 1954 and operated the Coca Cola bottling plant until his retirement.

His church affiliation was Episcopalian.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Walter Johnson Fargason Sr. and Kathleen Downs Fargason, his stepmother, Snowdell Wood Fargason, two brothers, Steven Wood Fargason and Walter J. Fargason Jr., and a daughter, Kathleen “Kapye” Downs Fargason.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Robinson Fargason of Laurel, Miss.; a daughter, Kristina “Bekye” Beckworth Fargason of New Orleans; son, Peter Robinson (Ann Baxter) Fargason of Fairhope; three grandsons Joseph Christin Follmer of New Orleans; James Robinson  (Anna Wright) Fargason of Fairhope and Peter Baxter (Regan Aycock) Fargason of Fairhope; and great-granddaughter, Shelby Fargason of Fairhope.

The family requests memorial donations be made to St. Johns Parish Church, 541 N. Fifth Ave., Laurel, MS 39440.

The family will commit his ashes and those of his daughter Kapye in a private ceremony in Conyers, Ga.
