ELBERTA — A wreck on the outskirts of Elberta earlier this week has taken the life of a Pensacola, Fla., man.
On Monday, Alabama State Troopers responded to a fatal, two-vehicle crash three miles east of the town on U.S. 98. Upon arrival, they learned that 35-year-old Jason L. Marks, of Pensacola was driving west in a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2007 Mack truck.
According to Sgt. Joe Piggott of Alabana Department of Public Safety, Marks, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene of the noon crash.
A passenger in his vehicle, 38-year-old Shannon Applin, and the driver of the Mack truck, Roy F. Harden, 57, of Navarre, Fla., were both transported to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Following the incident, Elberta Police assisted with the case.
“All we did was handle traffic for them,” Elberta Police Chief Stan DeVane said.
The cause of the crash, which curtailed traffic, remains under investigation.
