SUMMERDALE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Sheriff Office announced June 5 that they are charging Michael York, 21, with one count of domestic violence in the first degree in connection with the scalding of his 6-month-old son.
According to a BCSO press release, the Sheriff’s Office responded to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center and Vick’s Trailer Park on County Road 38 in Summerdale May 22 to investigate a report of a scalded infant.
Investigators say the child had first-degree burns to 85 percent of his body, and “severe” second degree burns to his arms and hands.
The child had been left in the care of his father, York.
According to reports, York brought the unresponsive infant to a neighbor’s home, asking her to call 911. The child was transported to SBRMC, and was later taken to the University of Alabama Birmingham Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
York told investigators that the child was hurt in a bathing accident. While checking on York, it was discovered that there were warrants for “numerous” traffic offenses in Shelby County. York was booked on those charges and taken to the Shelby County Jail.
BCSO investigators went to Birmingham June 4 to speak to the infant’s doctors there to determine his injuries.
Investigators then interviewed York, who confessed to harming the child on purpose. The Department of Human Resources removed the child from the custody of both parents and the case will be presented to a Baldwin County Grand Jury.
