BAY MINETTE, Ala.— Home has been were the heart and the wins are for the Faulkner State men and head coach Jack Robertson. His Sun Chiefs have not lost a home game since mid 2014. Austin Samuel scored 21 points, Cordero Dade scored 17 points (14 rebounds) and Montez Brown scored 12 points to lead Faulkner State to an 82-62 homecoming win over Wallace-Selma Thursday night.
The Sun Chiefs have won seven of their last 10 games and improved to 19-5 overall, 5-2 in South-Division play and handed FSCC head coach Jack Robertson his 850th career victory.
“It’s always nice to win at home and homecoming,” said Robertson. “But really good to get this one here at Faulkner State tonight. The guys wanted it and it showed tonight with the way they played.
Montez is doing a great job, but playing a lot of minutes. Cordero is doing a great job for us as well all around. Best half of defense we played all year, won the 50-50 balls and didn’t turn the ball over.”
Robertson (850-445) is in his 43rd season as head coach and ranks top among all-time coaching wins in the state of Alabama and 4th among active coaches and 9th among the all-time coaches in the National Junior College Athletic Association. His teams have won three state championships and been runner up three times. They have also won 14 Southern Division championships.
Robertson’s best season was the 1991 team which won a state record of 32 games. The Sun Chiefs won the state championship and then finished sixth in the nation at the national tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
He was inducted into the Baldwin County High School Hall of Fame in 1997, the NJCAA Region 22 Hall of Fame in 1997, and the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010 in Las Vegas.
Wallace-Selma was led by E. Leggett with a game high 25 points. FSCC travels to Jeff Davis in Brewton Feb. 11 and returns home to host Alabama Southern Feb. 15 and Bishop State Feb. 18.
