 • Six Sun Chiefs score double figures to win overtime thriller for homecoming

BAY MINETTE—The Faulkner State women extended their hot streak to nine with an 83-74 overtime win over Wallace-Selma Thursday night. Yasmine Beasley and Latia Pullum led the Sun Chiefs with 16 points each. Charity Moore scored 12 points while Zana Burke, Emilee Cunningham and Jasmine Lee-Stackhouse added 10 points each for Faulkner State. FSCC was 21-of-32 at the free-throw line. The Patriots shot 18-for-31 at the line and were led in scoring by Ki'Onna Likely with a game high 22 points. Alexis Lewis added 12 and Frenika Craig 10.

Down 37-32 at halftime the Sun Chiefs fell behind by 10 points near the 5:30 mark, but rallied back to take the lead 79-74 with about 90 seconds left. The Pats were not done, however coming back to tie 72-72 at the end of regulation. But FSCC then went into overdrive with an 11-2 run to win in overtime.

“Our defense really stepped up at the end,” said FSCC head coach Linda Pitts. “I don’t think we played all that well tonight, but we played with heart and played with passion. We made a couple of steals, grabbed a couple of big rebounds there near the end and asserted ourselves. Can’t find fault for playing hard. We had to dig, scratch and claw tonight, but hats off to a good job.”

The win was FSCC’s ninth in the last 10 games as they improved to 16-2 overall and 6-1 to take the lead in the South Division. The Patriots are in second at 5-2.

The Sun Chiefs women will host back-to-back home stands with Alabama Southern on Feb. 15 and Bishop State on Feb. 18. (5:15 p.m. tipoff).
