Out-of-state freshmen Nicole Sweat and Amber Wilson each pitched a five-inning four-hitter Friday afternoon to help Faulkner State sweep Bishop State of Mobile 9-0 and 13-2 in both teams’ first Alabama Community College Conference South Division games of the season on the FSCC field.
Sweat, from Loganville, Ga., struck out eight Lady Wildcats and walked one in the first game and also started one of Faulkner’s two ground-ball double plays.. Wilson, of Pensacola, struck out five and walked one in the nightcap.
FSCC’s first doubleheader sweep of the season also put the coach Paul Jones’ Lady Sun Chiefs over the .500 mark at 11-10.
Third baseman Meghan Sloke drove in the only run Sweat needed with an RBI single in a five-run third inning in the first game. All of the runs were unearned as a result of the first two of four Bishop errors in the inning.
Faulkner scored four runs, all earned, in the bottom of the fourth, then Sweat pitched around her only walk, a two-out pass, in the bottom of the inning to end the game early, Sweat snared Brittany Moore’s line drive for the final out.
First baseman Terri Johnson had two of Faulkner’s nine first-game hits, each good for an RBI. The first was an infield hit in the third, the other a double to the left field fence in the fourth. Sweat followed Johnson’s double with her own RBI two-bagger to right-center.
Using an entirely different lineup in the nightcap, Jones got two hits each from Gulf Shores sophomore second baseman Whitney Harris, freshman right fielder Amanda Spillers and freshman first baseman Amber Hester.
Harris and Sillers doubled, Spillers driving in one of three FSCC runs in the second to help push the Lady Sun Chiefs’ lead to 7-0. Harris’ leadoff single in the first helped start a four-run rally. Hester singled leading off the third for a five-run uprising, led off the fourth with another base hit got by BSCC right fielder Andrea Williams, and Hester scored the game’s final run on on a ground out by freshman left fielder Alexis Mumaw.
Bishop committed eight more errors in the second game and Faulkner picked up 10 unearned runs. The Lady Widcats avoided being shut out twice by scoring both of their runs in the third inning on three hits, including an RBI single by Angelica Williams.
Shanda Thornton had two hits and walked in three plate appearances for Bishop in the second game. No Lady Wildcat had more than one hit in the first game.
Lainie Anderson pitched both games for Bishop. She walked two in each game and picked up her lone strkeout of the day in the second game.
