FEAB eyes projects for 2010

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope Environmental Advisory Board met Wednesday and discussed its upcoming projects for the coming year.

One project the volunteer group has been working on since last year and hopes to complete in the next few months is a brochure describing all of the city’s more than 20-some public parks.

That task has not been as easy as it might seem because some of the parks are not well-identified, are known by different names, or not regularly visited by the public, much less noted on any existing map.

“Some people in that neighborhood don’t think it is a public park,” one group member said of one such park.

The board is working with the city planning department to produce an accurate map of these parks and the local amenities available at each one, such as the skate plaza and the city’s first dog park (currently under construction), both of which are located at Volanta Park.

Other projects for 2010 include plans to improve environmental conditions at Fly Creek, to analyze water quality at the beach-front park, and develop recommendations for sustainable parking policies and rules in the city.

Some members of the group also participate in the ongoing countywide effort to develop a stormwater authority for Baldwin County. The steering committee of that group will have a public meeting regarding its current efforts for a countywide referendum in November and other organizational issues at 9 a.m., Friday, Feb. 20, at city hall in Daphne.

The Fairhope Environmental Advisory Board meets at 9 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the City Hall.
