FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship will present the work of Mickey and John Cleverdon in a joint exhibition entitled “Mostly Words and Woodcuts.” The opening reception will be held Nov. 7, from 3-5 p.m., at the Fellowship.

The Unitarian String Quartet will provide music for the occasion, and there will be refreshments by Joyce Burkhart. The public is invited to attend.

John Hauser Cleverdon was born in New Orleans, grew up in Mobile and graduated from Murphy High School in 1948. He attended Principia College in Elsah, Ill., where he received a bachelor of arts degree. He attended the University of Alabama on the G.I. Bill, and received a master of arts in 1957.

He taught two-dimensional design and printmaking in the art departments of Jacksonville University, and the University of South Alabama, where he served as department chairman for five years before retiring.

John has had three one-person shows and his work has been shown in juried and invitational exhibitions including exhibits in Birmingham, New Orleans, Chattanooga and Madison, Wisc.

He regularly exhibits works with the Mobile Art Association, and the Watercolor and Graphic Arts Society of Mobile. His work has been shown in Gulf ArtSpace, the Eastern Shore Art Center, the Mobile Museum of Art and the Eichold Gallery at Spring Hill College.

In 1999 Ian Robertson’s Slow Loris Press of Fairhope published “Questions of Form,” a book of poems by Mickey Cleverdon and woodcuts by John Cleverdon.

Mary Brobston Cleverdon (Mickey) received a bachelor of arts in music and English at Converse College, and a master of arts in English from the University of Alabama.

She taught English at Jacksonville University, Bishop State College, the University of South Alabama and Spring Hill College.

Besides the collaboration with her husband, John, on the chapbook, “Questions of Form,” they also participated in the show 2X2 at the Mobile Museum of Art, with poems and portraits based on her collection of poems, “Women of Character.”

Mickey and Jo Patton presented a show at the Eastern Shore Art Center, “Wharfs and Words,” which included a catalogue, “Angles of Reflection,” edited by Fran Neumann.

Her poetry has appeared in “Negative Capability,” “Penumbra,” “Red Bluff Review” and “Whatever Remembers Us: An Anthology of Alabama Poetry,” edited by Sue Walker.

The exhibition will remain on display through December at the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship gallery, which is open Saturdays, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The Fellowship is located at 1150 Fairhope Ave., across from the Baldwin County Satellite Courthouse.
