FOLEY, Ala. — Caitlin Alexandra Buemi, 16, a Foley High School student, died Sunday morning from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on South Juniper Street.

According to a news release issued by Foley Police Department that same day, the traffic accident occurred near the intersection of Lawson Road. Buemi, the driver of the vehicle, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Foley Fire Department after the vehicle left the road, struck a telephone pole and overturned.

The FHS junior was transported to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, the release said. The Baldwin County Coroner’s Office said the accident occurred at 10:28 a.m.

Buemi was the sole occupant of the car.

The accident is under investigation by the Foley Police Department.

FHS Principal Russ Moore said Buemi transferred to FHS in January from Gulf Shores High School.

She was a cheerleader at GSHS and became a FHS cheerleader following tryouts a week or two ago, he said. Buemi was also a member of the FHS soccer team.

“It’s a tough loss for her family, friends and the school as a whole,” Moore said on Monday.

“She made a great impression here in a short amount of time.”

Moore said students at FHS on Monday had talked to school counselors and members of the Peer Helpers program in connection with Buemi’s death.

“She was well thought of in Gulf Shores,” Moore said, noting a memorial service was held at GSHS for Buemi.
