“Raw Dawg” won the 2008 Fairhope High School Downhill Races Event.
Each year, students in Danny Coleman's pre-engineering I classes create downhill racers and bring them to the corner of Bancroft Avenue and Oak Street to test them out. The street is blocked off, the racers, all juniors at FHS, line up in anticipation, and the race is on! The many varied constructions work on gravity and engineering concepts, rolling quickly, wildly, or slowly down the hill, two cars at a time, to cheers from onlookers.
Thomas Kinsey said, “We learned how to weld, put in steering and brakes as well as put it all together, all things we did not know how to do before. It’s all about problem solving.”
When asked how his team won, he answered “Unique steering.”
