DAPHNE - An early morning fire on Friday destroyed a second-floor unit and damaged four others in the Arbor Gates Apartments on Van Avenue in Daphne. Two firefighters were injured while extinguishing the blaze. One was transported to Thomas Hospital with rib injuries. The other was treated for cuts.

According to fire officials, no smoke alarms sounded during the blaze, but all occupants escaped without injury. They were alerted to the fire by being awaked by residents banging on doors and windows.

The fire took less than an hour to extinguish. Although the fire was contained to apartment 527, other units in the building received smoke and water damage. All residents of those units have been relocated.
