FOLEY, Ala. — Foley Fire Department’s report for May, given this week to the city council, had the lowest number of incidents — 66 — in the past year, according to Fire Chief Joey Darby.
But Darby told the mayor and council that FFD had encountered a “number of issues” in May with existing occupancies.
“We’ve had to be firm in some cases because it dealt with life issues,” Darby said.
Darby’s report reflected that last month FFD performed a total of 42 “existing occupancy inspections,” 14 of those involving businesses. Other inspections falling under the category include 22 “merchantile” inspections, four “assembly” inspections, one “factory” inspection, and one “institutional” inspection.
Since January 2009, FFD has conducted 244 total existing occupancy inspections, 92 of which have been businesses. Last month, FFD conducted 28 new construction inspections, 210 since January.
Those numbers are among 828 total inspections FFD has conducted during the fiscal year to date.
FFD’s responses during May included 14 medical assists of EMS crews; 14 motor vehicle accidents with no injuries; 11 motor vehicle accidents with injuries; seven false alarms or false calls; five passenger vehicle fires; and three building fires.
Darby said a building fire in Savannah Park caused “significant damage.”
FFD also had 88 total public education contacts through monthly CPR and First Aid classes.
Foley Police Department made 72 misdemeanor arrests in May and 32 felony arrests. Warrants served during the month were 98 misdemeanor and three felony.
FPD made 26 DUI arrests in May, wrote 411 traffic citations, 611 traffic warnings, assisted motorist 94 times, and responded to 79 motor vehicle accidents. Officers also answered 158 alarms during the month.
The total number of Computer Aided Dispatch entries in May were 3,806 and 1,055 calls for service were dispatched.
FPD made 13 misdemeanor marijuana arrests in May and two felony marijuana arrests. There were 14 controlled substance arrests, 11 drug paraphernalia arrests and one drug raid/search warrant.
FPD’s Criminal Investigation Division received 94 new cases in May with a carry-over of three unsolved cases. Fifty-six cases were solved leading to 23 felony arrests and 12 misdemeanor arrests.
Officers followed up on 10 domestic violence cases.
One new registration of a sex offender took place in May. The city has 22 total registered sex offenders.
Foley City Jail had a total of 316 arrestees in May. The highest number in jail at one time was 35, the lowest 19.
The School Resource Officer filed eight police reports during the month and held 30 discipline meetings.
Animal Services had 85 total calls and issued four warnings during May.
FPD Community Services held one strategy meeting during May, one Neighborhood Watch meeting and one Police Service Expo. Community Outreach had 53 GED participants in four GED classes and conducted two Youth Activity events.
As for crimes reported in May, they included 35 misdemeanor thefts; 16 felony thefts; 18 domesticincidents; seven residential burglaries; 17 harassment; 13 criminal mischief; 13 white collar crimes; one sex crime; one rape; three death investigations; three weapons offenses; and two robbery of persons.
The Community Development Department issued 53 total permits in May at a total construction valuation of $1,297,817. Those included two single-family residential permits ($165,000 total construction valuation) and one new commercial permit for the McDonald’s on the Foley Beach Express ($860,223).
City inspectors performed 158 inspections during May.
Environmental/Code Enforcement heard 32 citizen complaints, undertook 32 enforcement actions, and made 11 environmental inspections.
Planning & Zoning looked at four plan reviews, three permit exempt reviews, and 30 permit reviews.
