DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne Fire Department received a $21,274 grant from The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. The funds will provide training and a computer with hazardous material software, fire department officials said.
The software includes a chemical database that contains the properties of a variety of chemicals. There’s also a feature that maps isolation distances and includes estimations on the gas cloud plumes according to wind speed, Kenny Hanak, DFD’s battalion chief said.
“We can use the computer to warn those out in the field of coming danger and of safe distances from it,” he said.
The equipment is made possible through the Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program, according to a news release.
CEDAP provides smaller communities and rural areas with technology and equipment, providing resources such as communications interoperability equipment, information sharing technology, chemical detection devices, sensors, personal protective equipment and rescue tools and training in how to use the equipment, devices, and technology, the release said.
Hanak said he filled out an application with a short narrative section for the grant. CEDAP’s $21,274 will pay for one firefighter to be trained in Washington, D.C. After training, that person will bring the computer back to the Daphne Fire Department, Hanak said.
“We’ll be notified this month about when the training will start,” he said.
“I am extremely pleased this funding was approved for the Daphne Fire Department” U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, said in the release. “Our first-responders must have the very best equipment to keep our communities safe, and I applaud DHS for providing this grant to improve their capabilities.”
