The Daphne Fire Department received a $59,850 grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The funding will be used to purchase three gas generators for fire stations behind City Hall, on Lawson Road and near the TimberCreek subdivision, interim fire Chief Kenny Hanak said.
“During hurricanes in the past, we’ve gone days without power,” Hanak said. With generators, firefighters will be better rested and prepared to help the public, he said.
“In the event of a hurricane, the fire stations can serve as a central base for police and the emergency medical services,” he added.
“That’s great news and I am extremely happy for them,” fire Chief James White, said when he heard of the grant.
The City Council named White fire chief at the Aug. 6 meeting, though White has not been given an official date to begin his duties.
Hanak, who has acted as interim fire chief since February when Chief Mund Hanson resigned, applied for the grant in April.
“I am extremely pleased this funding was approved for the Daphne Fire Department,” U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Ala., said in a news release.
“Our first-responders deserve the very best equipment, and I applaud DHS for providing this much-needed grant to improve their capabilities,” Bonner said.
