First Presbyterian to have fundraiser for children's home

GULF SHORES, AL - Pat McCann, well-known for his versatile abilities on the guitar, will be featured at the upcoming BBQ Benefit for the Presbyterian Home for Children on Jan. 31, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Gulf Shores.

McCann began playing Texas Roadhouse music in Austin with legendary singer/songwriter Freddy Powers and Stop the Truck Band. Pat has toured around the world, sharing the stage with legendary greats such as Merle Haggard, as well as the Mau Mau Chaplains, the reggae alter ego of the Stop the Truck Band.

McCann also honored a special request from the family of President George W. Bush to perform his solo show for the wedding rehearsal dinner of their daughter, Jenna Bush. A resident of the Alabama Gulf Coast, composer and recording musician Pat McCann plays it all - from jazz to country to R & B.

The history of the Presbyterian Home for Children began during the aftermath of the Civil War, when members of the Presbyterian Church in Alabama, recognizing the large number of widows and orphans in Alabama, decided to open a children’s home to provide these children with food, shelter, and an education.

After several years of struggling to raise the money needed to open the doors, the Home accepted its first children in 1868. Today, the  88 acre campus in Talladega includes residential cottages, school buildings, a gymnasium, dining hall and counseling center. In 2009, Family Bridges, a family preservation program in the Clay/Chalkville area near Birmingham, opened and is now serving more than 200 families a year with programs aimed at keeping families together.

All proceeds from this event will go to the PCH. In addition to the sounds of guitarist Pat McCann, a BBQ plate lunch with sides, drink and dessert will be served. Suggested donation is $8 each for adults and $4 for children and can be obtained at the church, weekdays before noon. The church is located at 309 E. 21st Ave. For more info. or to order tickets, call 251-978-8130.
