Fish fry Saturday to benefit 7-month-old

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- Cindy Major is on a mission. She is on a mission to provide assistance with medical expenses for 7-month-old Lola Joy Benton.

Lola, the daughter of Paul and Lindsey Benton of Silverhill, is battling sickness and recovery of Mal-Rotation of her intestines.

Lola was born with Turners Syndrome and her small intestines outside of her body in October of 2012. She had surgery to put her intestines back inside her body within 18 hours of birth. On April 6, her intestines experienced a “kink” in them, so to speak, and caused her body to fill up with toxins.

The medical term for what her body experienced is septic shock. The doctors explained on April 6 that her condition was 99 percent non-recoverable and that all of the organs were in complete failure, but she has made it through all of the odds and is now recovering in the Pediatric ICU at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile.

“I want to do what I can to get help for this family,” Major said. “It’s not just because she’s my granddaughter, but because it’s the right thing to do. I feel that this is what the Lord wants me to do.”

A benefit fish fry will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the PZK Civic Center, 17933 Highway 104, Robertsdale.

“She is the definition of a true fighter,” Major said, “however, she will have a lengthy hospital stay. Her parents are welcoming any assistance they can get with her expenses for her stay in the hospital.”

Major estimates that the family will accrue approximately $25,000 in out-of-pocket expenses.

The City of Robertsdale has donated the use of the PZK Civic Center. Bon Secour Fisheries, Safe Harbour, Billy’s Seafood, Wallace Seafood and Aquila Seafood have combined to donate more than 350 pounds of fish for the event. L.A. Barbecue has donated baked beans and Danny’s Fried Chicken has donated cole slaw. Baldwin Paper Co. has also donated paper products.

Plates will be available for a donation of $5. Canned drinks, donated by Joe Kitchens of Furniture City, will be available for a donation of $1. Donations can also be made by calling Major at 251-752-8007.

“No amount is too small,” Major said. “We’ll take all the help we can get.”
