Five Baldwin teams open state playoffs tonight

Five of Baldwin County’s high school football teams survived the regular season and will play in first round football state playoff games tonight, but will all five teams survive to play in the next round?

At least two Baldwin teams look to have almost “sure bets” to get through to the next round.

Class 3A No.3 Bayside Academy (10-0), the only county team to win a region title this season, looks to have the easiest test tonight as the Admirals host a Montevallo team that finished 4-5 overall.

In Class 6A three Baldwin teams, including defending champion Daphne, picked up playoff bids. Daphne, who finished 9-1 and as runner-up in Region 2, will host historically successful Opelika (7-2) tonight at Jubilee Stadium. Elsewhere in 6A, Fairhope (8-2) visits Auburn (8-1) and Foley (7-3) visits Central-Phenix City (8-2).

In 5A, defending champion Spanish Fort (7-3) has the farthest to travel in the first round, visiting Birmingham-area school Fairfield (9-1).

Montevallo at Bayside Academy: Bayside Academy finished its first 10-0 season in school history and captured the 3A Region 1 title behind an explosive rushing attack led by Jonathan Walton and Joe Stassen. The odds are easily in Bayside’s favor, as Montevallo hasn’t reached the second round of the state playoffs since 1998. Admirals coach Phil Lazenby is 10-1 in first round playoff games in his career in the state. Bayside Academy averages 37.9 points per game and Stassen is its leading rusher with more than 1,000 yards this season. Prediction: Bayside Academy 38, Montevallo 14.

Opelika at Daphne: Daphne hosts an interesting first round game against one of the more storied programs in the state, the Opelika Bulldogs. The Trojans average more than 40 points per game, and that average will be put to the test by Opelika’s big, physical defensive line. Daphne running back T.J. Yeldon needs a 100-yard game to reach the 2,000-yard mark for the season. Daphne and Opelika have met six times in the playoffs, and Daphne has won five of those games. Prediction: Daphne 31, Opelika 17.

Fairhope at Auburn: Fairhope (8-2) is a tough draw for any team in the first round of the playoffs because of its explosive offense. The Pirates have the highest scoring offense in Class 6A with an average of 43.7 points per game. Fairhope’s defense is no slouch either, regularly returning interceptions and fumbles for scores and holding opponents when the Pirates need a stop. Auburn is tough to beat at home at Duck Samford Stadium, posting a 4-1 record there this season. Prediction: Fairhope 35, Auburn 28.

Foley at Central-Phenix City: Central-Phenix City (8-2) is a tough draw for a playoff opener for Foley. The Red Devils are 5-0 at home at Garrett-Harrison Stadium this season and are 16-2 there the last three seasons. Prediction: Central 28, Foley 27.

Spanish Fort at Fairfield: By virtue of finishing third in 5A Region 1, the defending champion Toros get to travel to Birmingham to face a 9-1 Fairfield team that has a smothering defense. Fairfield gives up just 12.3 points per game and has held five opponents to fewer than 10 points. Fairfield’s only loss came to 5A No. 1 Hueytown. Still, Spanish Fort (7-3) can escape Clements Field with a win if its offense can get rolling. Fairfield’s offense averages just 21.3 points per game, and if Spanish Fort is 7-0 when scoring more than 21. Prediction: Spanish Fort 27, Fairfield 24.
