DAPHNE, Alabama — Five football recruits from Daphne High officially signed their letters of intent Wednesday at Trojan Hall in the Jubilee City. All five were contributing sophomore players in the 15-0 state championship season of 2010.
Jalan Coleman signed with the University of Alabama Birmingham, UAB, Trey Jenkins with Alabama State, Trey Rembert with West Alabama, Elliott Williams with Faulkner University and T.J Fleeton made it official with Northwestern State University of Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Daphne head football coach and athletic director Glenn Vickery said the success of the student-athletes was the culmination of their own hard work in the nurturing environment of caring teachers, administrators, family, friends and community.
“Somebody said it takes a village,” he said. “And I think that’s very, very true when it comes to education. These young men would not be in the position they’re in today and able to take part in this special opportunity without the dedication of their coaches and teachers and counselors, administrators and their parents. It takes skill to play t this level and the college level, but it also takes a good G.P.A. and so we emphasize that from day one.
“You can be a great player, but if you don’t pass English or History, you’re not going to get the chance to play because you won’t be eligible. And the standards are getting higher all the time. So while it’s a big day of celebration here for us and these guys and their parents especially, it’s also a chance for us to remind the younger students to put their schoolwork first and the other good things will come to you. But we’re really proud of Jalan, T.J., Trey, Trey and Elliot for all they have accomplished and all they have done for Daphne High School.”
