Matthew George Flanigan, 68, a resident of Gulf Shores, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in St. Augustine, Fla. He was a native of Chicago. He lived many years in Wisconsin and retired to Gulf Shores in 2002.

He was a graduate of DePaul University. He also received his masters with distinction from DePaul. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He was assistant director of Admission at DePaul until 1972. From there he went to St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wis., and when he left he was vice president for External Affairs.

In 1989 he became president of Marian College, Fond du Lac, Wis. In 1997 he became vice president for Developement at Jacksonville University in Florida. During his years in education, Flanigan was involved in many educational organizations.

He served as president of the Wisconsin Association of College Admission Counselors and the National Association of College Admission Counselors. He was active at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church and served on the Benedictine Council at St. Benedict School. He worked with the Special Olympic Swim Team, “Starfish,” and served as President of Lakewood Villas Homeowners Association.

Survivors include his wife, Judie; four children, Sarah (Matthew) Duke of Montgomery, Andrew (Christy) Flanigan of Daphne, Bridget (Jason) Shrader of Stevenson and Sissy Flanigan of Gulf Shores; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Adele, Lucy and Matthew “Cooper” Duke; a brother, Edward of Manhattan, Ill.; nine nephews and 10 nieces.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Foley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Prince of Peace Cemetery, Elbert.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Matthew Flanigan Fund at either Mary’s Shelter, P.O. Box 18, Elberta, AL, 36530, or Christian Service Center-Food Bank, P.O. Box 882, Gulf Shores, AL, 36547.
