ROBERTDALE, Alabama -- Looking to do a little spring cleaning? Or maybe you’re looking to do a little spring shopping?
Either way, the George P. Thames Senior Center in Robertsdale has the solution for you.
On Saturday, April 27, the senior center will host its second annual Flea Market Day beginning at 8 a.m. at the PZK Civic Center, 17933 Highway 104, Robertsdale.
“We’re hoping to have good spring weather so people can come out and support the senior center on Saturday,” said Director Sarah Duncan.
Saturday’s flea market serves as a fundraiser supporting all the senior center’s programs, Duncan said. Funds raised by the flea market will also be used to help send athletes to the annual Alabama Masters Games Tournament held every October at the Valley Community Center.
This will be the eighth straight year seniors from Robertsdale will compete in the games. In 2012, participants from the senior center added 70 medals to their total, bringing the count to more than 200 over the last five years of competition.
Twenty-six seniors qualified in local competitions held throughout Mobile and Baldwin counties in May through July with 23 seniors making the trip to the games in 2012.
Participants, ranging in age from 50 all the way up to 92, brought home 23 gold medals, 16 silver and nine bronze, along with 24 fun walk medals.
According to the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission website, the Masters Games of Alabama is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for active adults age 50 and over through social, mental, and physical activities.
They were developed in Oxford in 1990 to provide adults age 50 and above an opportunity to maintain an active lifestyle by participating in a variety of events. Each year there are between 600 and 800 participants from across the state.
With nearly two dozen participants, the group from the Thames Center is one of the largest from one participating organization in the state, Duncan said, and is the largest group attending from District 7, which includes Baldwin, Mobile, Escambia, Conecuh, Washington, Choctaw, Clarke, Wilcox and Monroe counties. Participants are also attending locally from Orange Beach, Saraland, Chickasaw and Mobile.
The Thames Center serves Robertsdale, Loxley and Silverhill in Central Baldwin, Duncan said. They also have participants from Fairhope, Gulf Shores, Elberta and Malbis.
The seniors meet every Tuesday at the PZK Civic Center to practice for the games, Duncan said. A group also meets every Friday for a field trip to practice at the Gulf Bowl in Foley.
This year, the Senior Center will host the double dominoes district qualifying tournament, which will be held June 4.
“We’re hoping for a good turnout and it’s not too late to sign up,” Duncan said.
Vendor spaces are also still available for Saturday’s flea market. Outside spaces cost $10 and inside spaces are available at a cost of $15, Duncan said.
There will also be a bake sale and lunch will be served for a nominal fee.
Inside spaces for the flea market are extremely limited, Duncan said, so pre-registration is required. Call the senior center at 251-947-8973 for more information.
