Florida man convicted in stalking of Olympic gymnast

An accused stalker, who was released after being stopped on Interstate 10 in Loxley in March of 2009, has been convicted on multiple charges in a California court.

Florida man Robert O’Ryan, who was 34 at the time of his arrest in Los Angeles, was found guilty Friday of felony stalking and burglary charges, and two misdeameanor concealed weapons violations.

O’Ryan was stopped around 1:30 a.m. on the morning of March 19 near mile marker 44 on I-10 by a Loxley Police Officer after his gold Honda Accord was spotted driving erratically. Days later on March 24, O’Ryan was arrested by Los Angeles authorities where Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson was filming the ABC television show “Dancing With The Stars.” According to Los Angeles authorities he was found with two loaded weapons, duct tape and love letters to Johnson.

The conviction came after four days of testimony, including testimony by Johnson, who was just 17 at the time of O’Ryan’s arrest.

A “dash cam” DVD released by the Loxley Police Department show O’Ryan being pulled over for the routine traffic stop.

The officer, observing the loaded car, did ask about weapons and did use his flashlight to see into the car, but did not spot any weapons in the vehicle.

O’Ryan appeared polite and relatively oriented during his half-hour with the officer, which resulted in a “warning” for improper lane usage, the reason he was stopped, and two citations for having expired license plates and no proof of insurance.

The DVD shows the officer asking O’Ryan about his trip.

“I have got a friend to meet,” said O’Ryan, adding later that “I’m meeting her there and, uh, I’m going to try to get her to marry me."

When the officer asked about his “friend,” O’Ryan said his friend was Johnson.

The officer did not seem to know who Johnson was. Under further questioning, O’Ryan revealed that he had a degree in engineering and no job lined up in California. He also revealed that his communication with Johnson was all via “ESP.”

“So, your communication with her has all been telepathic?” asked the officer, who asked O’Ryan if he was seeing a doctor or getting counseling.

After questioning by the Loxley officer, O’Ryan said he had no adult arrest record. That checked out when the officer asked dispatch about wants and warrants.

O’Ryan explained his expired tags as a result of his being ill with a back condition.

“I couldn’t drive,” O’Ryan said. “I was (pause) getting my health and strength back.”

O’Ryan said he had appointments with doctors about his back, and had declined surgery. He added that his caregivers had made an appointment with a psychologist, but he said, “I am not sure why they did that.”

O’Ryan said he was treating his bad back with traditional Chinese medicine, exercising and stretching.

The encounter between the officer and O’Ryan appeared relatively friendly and routine. As O’Ryan was exiting the squad car, the officer told him to “Drive safely and pay attention to what you are doing while you are driving down the highway.”

The officer then wished O’Ryan luck.

“Thank you,” said O’Ryan.

O’Ryan was found to be legally insane at the time of his arrest in March and will serve his sentence in a state mental hospital. If found sane, O’Ryan faced up to four years in a state prison and two years in county lockup.
