Foley band gears up for 2012 halftime show

The 2012 Foley Marching Band has a membership of 220 students who have spent the last three weeks fighting the heat, gnats and fatigue to learn this year’s halftime show, “Styx and Stones…and all things cool,” featuring music from the 70s and 80s rock band, Styx.

The band plays classic Styx hits like “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself” throughout the show, along with current pop music like LMFAO’s “Party Rockin’” and V.I.C.’s “Wobble.” To see a video of the show, visit www.youtube.com and search for “Foley Band Camp 2012.”

The “Mighty Band from Lion Land” is under the field direction of drum majors Kenzie Dumond, Frederick Lenz and Madalyn McCormick.

The director of bands is Carl Major, and the assistant directors are Jimmy O’Cain and Rusty Parker. The color guard instructors are Bill Blocker and Mary Leigh.

Staff members for the 2012 Foley marching band are Amanda Major, brass and marching coordinator; Rhett Griffith, high brass instructor; James Holmes and Bret Morse, trumpet instructors and marching coordinators; Zachary Jennelle, tuba instructor; Chris Helms, saxophone instructor; Russell Green, horn instructor and visual coordinator; Alex Malave, trombone instructor; Dillon Worley, baritone instructor; Nick Noble and Dylan Yates, drumline instructor; Bret Morse, high brass and marching instructor; Daniel Holmes, clarinet and marching instructor; Sherian Cain, dance line coordinator.

In addition, the help and support from Bobby Malone, Foley Middle, Foley Intermediate, and Summerdale School Band Director, will be utilized in all areas of the Foley Band Program. 2012-2013 Band Parent Officers are Georgette Tacheny, president; Tom Short, first vice president; Julie Nims, second vice president; Christine Schaff, secretary; Cheryl Hobbs, treasurer.

The “Mighty Band From Lion Land” has a long tradition of excellence stemming back to the late 1970s. The concert and marching bands have earned superior ratings for more than 30 years. Past winter guard, winter drumline and jazz bands have earned both regional and national championships. Some of the many accolades of the band program include: Bands of America Regional Finalist; National Hall of Fame Bowl; National Peach Bowl Grand Champions; Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade; Boscov’s Nationally Televised Thanksgiving Day Parade; Loyola Universities National Invitational Grand Champion; Universal Studios Grand Champion; Fiesta Bowl Parade; National “Grammy Signature” Awarded Band Program (only 100 band programs in the Nation were awarded this prestigious status); Prestigious member of the Conn - Selmer All-American School Foundations; Commendations from the Alabama State Senate and the President of the United States; First Place Parade Band in the Fiesta Flambeaux Parade in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, the Foley Steel Band has performed at many city and school board functions as well as weddings and parties and the Goombay Festival in Florida.
