FOLEY, Alabama – The Foley Lions scored three runs in the final two innings to beat the Baldwin County Tigers 5-4 on the first day of pool play in the BayBears Classic tournament on Monday.
Patrick Grumbley’s RBI single drove in Brandon Fontaine from second base in the bottom of the seventh for the winning run. Fontaine had walked and reached second on a passed ball before Grumbley’s hit.
“We got some timely hitting the last two innings,” Foley head coach Steve Garrett said. “Baldwin County is a big rival and we will see them a lot more this year. We won this game and that’s a good sign that we didn’t give up.”
Foley (1-0) trailed 3-2 until Brax Garrett tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth and took a 4-3 lead on an RBI double from Bryce Guery. The Tigers (0-1) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh but managed just one run off winning pitcher Kelly Gunn (1-0), who struck out three in two innings of relief. Garrett, who started for the Lions on the mound, struck out seven in five innings.
BCHS scored three runs in the top of the first on an RBI triple from Kyle Buck, who later scored on a wild pitch, and an RBI double from Nate Jones. Foley added a run in the bottom of the first when a run scored after Garrett grounded out. The Lions scored again in the bottom of the second when Michael McConnell drove in Maison Taylor on a single.
“(BCHS) came out swinging the bats right away,” Garrett said. “I’ve been preaching to my pitchers that they need to have pitched at least an inning before they get on the mound. (Brax), my third oldest boy, a freshman lefty, did a good job. That’s as many innings as he has thrown. He is going to be tough for us. Then Kelly came in and did a great job closing it out. “
The teams will continue BayBears Classic pool play in Foley on Tuesday as BCHS faces Spanish Fort at 4 p.m. and Foley hosts Bayside at 6 p.m.
