Foley boy dies in tractor mishap

FOLEY, Ala. — An 11-year-old Foley area boy was killed Wednesday morning in a tractor accident in Franklin County, Ala.

Franklin County Coroner Elzie Malone of Red Bay said Caleb Coxwell of Daughtery Road died while visiting in the Tharptown community eight to 10 miles east of Russellville.

The 911 call concerning the tractor mishap and child’s death came in at 8:38 a.m., Malone said.

“The little boy was riding on the fender of the tractor with a gentleman driving,” Malone said during a telephone interview on Thursday morning.

“They hit a little tree about four inches in diameter and broke the tree over. We feel like when it (tree) came down it brushed him and knocked him off balance or he jumped off. He came off and landed under the Bush Hog.”

Malone said the boy was pronoumced dead at the scene from multiple injuries.

The coroner said it was his understanding that Caleb was visiting with friends.

“Someone said he had grandparents in Huntsville,” Malone said.

While Malone said it was his understanding that Caleb was visiting with friends as opposed to family members, he said, “The guy operating the machinery — it’s something he won’t ever get over.

“We need to caution everybody to be careful and don’t let children ride with you when you disk or Bush Hog.”

Malone said somebody told him that over a hundred children a year nationwide die in tractor accidents like the one that took Caleb’s life.
