DAPHNE — Most expected a hard-fought 6A Section 2 battle and they got one plus overtime. The Lions and Trojans traded three goals each in regulation at Jubilee Stadium at Daphne High to send the match into overtime.
About four minutes in, Jorge Santamaria got a running right foot on a bouncer to the DHS box and slammed it into the net for the 4-3 match winner.
It was the senior's third goal of the night in what was a truly electrified, playoff-like atmosphere. "That's a big deal," said Lion head coach Jeremy Borchardt.
"This was pure wall-to-wall soccer. To start off our regional play with a win against a top-notch team like Daphne — and they are top notch. My hat's off to coach (Rick) Andrew. He has a very fast aggressive team that plays tough. This was a 50-50 game all the way. Jorge (Santamaria) just got that goal at the end. And it was him, that's the way he plays. All our guys played great. I'm proud of them, but he is just one of those guys who never quits."
Andrew said he knew Foley would be tough as well.
"I'm proud of our players, they give you everything they have and they played hard. We fell a little short, but we're young and we made some silly mistakes. And of course Santamaria made some great goals tonight. Big time players step up in big time games and he did."
Santamaria scored the first goal of the match, but Brandon Roberts later tied it on a penalty kick. DHS took the lead 2-1 on another PK by Roberts, but Bryant Lopez tied it for Foley 2-2 with 20 minutes left in the game.
About seven minutes later, Roberts again scored on a PK for a 3-2 DHS lead. But Santamaria stuck again with 3:12 on the clock. The Trojans attacked, but were not able to score to send the match into the sudden-death overtime.
