GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The Foley High School men's soccer team lost all three of their games in the Island Cup tournament in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach while the Lady Lions soccer team won one game and lost two.

Foley lost 5-0 against Grissom High School in their first game of the tournament. Foley goalkeeper Eric Cabrera made 15 saves, and the Lions were held to only five shots.

Mitch Wilson scored twice and had an assist for Grissom, while Jake Vayda, Aaron Justice and Matthew Volz each scored once.

FHS head coach Jeremy Borchardt said Grissom is one of the best teams in the state and were ranked high in the 6A region at the beginning of the season.

“Keeping it down to 5-0 is respectable,” he said.

In Foley’s final game, the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 advantage against St. Paul's, but seven unanswered goals proved to be too much offense for the Lions to climb back into the game.

FHS’ Kevin Hynes scored in the sixth minute and again in the 61st minute to lead the Lions. Lions goalkeeper Eric Cabrera made 11 saves, and Daniel Fowler added an assist on a front-flip throw in. St. Paul's had 21 shots on goal to the Lions' 11 shots on goal.

In the Lady Lions' first game of the tournament, FHS hung tough with Mountain Brook through the first half of play, but an own goal early in the second half opened the flood gates.

Mountain Brook took an early 1-0 lead in the first half, and the Lady Lions' defense clamped down until the second half when an own goal widened the deficit to two goals. Mountain Brook scored four more times.

Lady Lions head coach Al Borchardt said his team could have done everything a bit better.

“(We could have) gone to the ball, talked and hustled more,” he said.

Lady Lions goalkeeper Brianna Mathis made 15 saves, keeping the Lady Lions within striking defense through the first 45 minutes. Mountain Brook took 26 shots compared to FHS’ two.

The Lady Lions rebounded from their first loss to shutout Tulsa-Memorial High School 3-0 in their second game of the tournament. However, they fell to Hewitt High School 5-0 on Saturday. The Foley men’s team lost their second game of the tournament by a score of 5-0 to Gadsen City High School.
