Foley child killed by truck in Barnwell

BARNWELL, Ala. — A 4-year-old from Foley was killed by a truck Monday evening after walking into the roadway to retrieve a skateboard.

Information released by Cpl. Joe Piggott of the State Trooper Office in Mobile on Monday at 11:02 p.m. said William Austin Wood was struck and killed at approximately 7 p.m.

According to Piggott, the child was apparently “playing near the edge of the road” when he walked into the roadway. The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 98 near Baldwin County Road 27 in this community.

“A westbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by John Michael Burnette, 41, of Fairhope was unable to stop before striking the child,” Piggott said.

The child was transported to Thomas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Asked Tuesday about the Foley child’s connection to Barnwell, Piggott said he was uncertain whether the child was visiting someone in the community or what. At the hospital, the child’s mother gave the Trooper investigating the incident a Foley address, Piggott said.

No charges have been filed against Burnette as neither speed nor alcohol are thought to have played a part in the child’s death, Piggott said.

The incident took place near sunset, according to Piggott.

Motorcycle crash kills driver

A 24-year-old Lillian man was killed Sunday morning when his 1995 Suzuki motorcycle struck a street sign.

The State Trooper Office in Mobile identified the victim as James Ronald Walker Jr.

According to Cpl. Joe Piggott, spokesman for the Alabama State Troopers, Walker was traveling east on U.S. Highway 98 at approximately 11:07 a.m. when his motorcycle struck the sign. The crash occurred two miles west of Elberta.

Piggott said speed was probably the primary factor in the crash. He did say an autopsy would be performed on Walker.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.
