FOLEY, Ala. — Over 200 city employees will be recognized when the city observes “Employee Recognition Day.” That day has been tentatively set for Saturday, May 31, and will be a family event at Max Griffin Park, according to Mayor John Koniar.

At Monday’s city council meeting, up to $5,000 was allocated for the event.

The day has traditionally been set as the day when pins are given out for years of service to the city, Koniar said. But this year Koniar said he felt it was important for family members to be present for the occasion, so 600 or more could be attending the event, the mayor said.

In other council action Monday, the Foley Fire Department report for April was given and reflected 97 calls during the month. Among those calls were 22 EMS assists; 15 motor vehicle accidents with injuries; 10 MVA without injuries; eight brush/grass fires; three structure fires; and two vehicle fires.

A resolution was approved awarding $374,807 for the Beulah Heights sidewalk project, a figure less than the grant to be used for the project.

A resolution was approved for a $15,000 contribution to the YMCA’s “Strong Kids Campaign.” Councilman Charlie Ebert III, a member of the YMCA Board, abstained from voting but voiced support of council action.

A resolution for street lighting was approved at the following sites: one street light on the existing utility pole on West Azalea Avenue; three street lights on existing poles on West Peachtree Avenue; one street light on existing utility pole on Spruce Avenue; and one street light on existing utility pole located east of 711 Section St.

Council members also approved $2,445 by resolution for roof repairs on the Post Office.

It was agreed upon by resolution that the city will take part in the State Tax Holiday that takes place Aug. 1-3 of this year.

Mike Werneth was approved by council members to replace Tim Russell on the Riviera Utilities Board.

Lindsay Schumacher, committee chair for Relay For Life, presented the city a plaque for its role in making Relay For Life the success it was. Schumacher said $83,000 was raised and some monies are still coming in.
