FOLEY, Ala. — City councilman Bob Schreiber cast his final vote at Monday’s city council meeting as he concluded 16 years in office. For the past several years, Schreiber has also served as city treasurer.
Schreiber, who did not seek reelection this year, said of his years on the council, some times were “great,” some were “trying.”
Schreiber was presented an engraved silver tray by Mayor John Koniar at the conclusion of Monday’s meeting.
“It’s been a great challenge,” Schreiber said of representing District 4 during two tenures on the city council. He told those on hand he hoped he had served well.
Schreiber was given a standing ovation by council members and those on hand. A reception was held for Schreiber at City Hall following the council meeting.
Walter Heard, who held the District 2 seat on the council for 12 years, was out of town and unable to be at the meeting. Heard lost his reelection bid this year. Koniar said the city would recognize Heard for his years of service at a later date.
Beginning next month, Vera Quaites and Rick Blackwell will take office, Quaites as District 2 councilwoman and Blackwell in the District 4 seat.
In council action on Monday, approval was given for several activities that will be held in the city:
The Krewe of Les Beau Geste’s Mardi Gras Parade on Feb. 21, 2009, beginning at noon;

Melissa Byrd’s request to use Heritage Park on April 4, 2009, for an “End of Treatment and Remission Celebration” as a thank you for community support while her son was undergoing treatment for Stage IV neuroblastoma.
Council members approved several second readings of ordinances, included in which were amending the zoning ordinance to establish regulations for sexually-oriented businesses, and rescinding an ordinance adopted Sept. 2, 2008 that repeals certain portions of the building code to allow for temporary and emergency repairs on property in the aftermath of a hurricane.
