FOLEY, Ala. — A Christmas Day fire on the campus of Foley High School was one of three structure fires reported for the month of December. As Fire Chief Joey Darby pointed out last week in giving his monthly report, however, that fire resulted in a fatality.
“I am pleased that was the only fire fatality in 2009,” Darby said in giving his report to the mayor and council.
Forty-one-year-old Lance Bammer died in that storage building blaze that appears to have been accidental.
For December, Foley Fire Department had a total of 75 incidents. Darby pointed out that 38 percent of those incidents involved motor vehicle accidents.
Noting that the FFD fire inspector performed 965 inspections during the past calendar year, Darby added in that regard, “We plan to continue to be busy.”
Foley Police Department’s report for December reflected 58 misdemeanor arrests and seven felony arrests. Eighty-one misdemeanor warrants were served and 12 felony warrants.
The Patrol Division made 21 DUI arrests, wrote 321 citations and 536 warnings. Officers conducted 959 close patrols, assisted motorists 118 times and worked 50 motor vehicle accidents. Officers answered 118 alarms during the month, had 169 positive citizen contacts and made 177 official business visits.
FPD Dispatch had a total of 4,079 computer aided dispatch entries and dispatched 1,074 calls for service.
The drug report for December showed 14 misdemeanor marijuana arrests and one felony marijuana arrest. There were 13 controlled substance arrests, 11 drug paraphernalia arrests, and four drug raids/search warrants.
FPD’s Criminal Investigations Division received 75 new cases last month and had 21 previous unsolved cases. Thirty-three cases were solved resulting in, among others, eight felony arrests and 22 sent to the grand jury.
There was one new sex offender registration last month bringing the total number of registered sex offenders in the city to 19.
Foley City Jail processed 216 arrestees last month. The highest number in jail at one time was 34; the lowest was 19.
The School Resource Officer took seven reports, held 25 discipline meetings and effected nine arrests and releases.
The Foley Police Mounted Unit appeared at two community events in December.
Animal Services answered 54 calls, wrote two citations and issued eight warnings.
Community Services held one strategy meeting and two Neighborhood Watch meetings.
Community Outreach and Development had 48 GED participants in three GED classes and held four youth activity events.
Among the crimes reported in the city during December were the following: one business robbery; two robberies of persons; one commercial burglary; four residential burglaries; 12 felony thefts; 28 misdemeanor thefts; 25 domestic incidents; 13 harassing communications; seven white collar crimes; three statutory rapes.
The Community Development Department issued 78 total permits in December at a total construction valuation of $1,393,883. Eight of those permits were for single-family residential and one was a new commercial.
Environmental/Code Enforcement heard five citizen complaints, performed 21 code enforcement inspections, took five enforcement actions, and conducted 24 environmental inspections.
City inspectors performed 356 inspections during December.
