FOLEY — Since it received the deed to land on Wolf Creek this spring, the city of Foley has been working to create a park named for the waterway. In a recent online interview, Foley Environmental Manager Leslie Lassiter Gahagan talked with The Onlooker about the project.
Q: Could you tell me about the improvements about to take place at Wolf Creek Park?
A: The City will construct a canoe/kayak launch, parking and drop off area, fishing pier and pavilion area at Wolf Creek Park.
Q: What kind of timeframe will that take?
A: It will take approximately three months to complete all improvements.
Q: Is it funded by a grant?
A: It was funded in part by ADCNR (Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) State Lands Coastal Division 306, a Coastal Access Improvement Grant through NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association).
Q: That’s land given to the city by the county earlier this year, right?
A: The city was transferred from the county to the city with the stipulation that the city make improvements valuing $190,000 in three years.
Q: How much land is it and where exactly is it located?
A: The total land acquired is around 25 acres. It is located off of County Road 20 on Wilson Road. The land is on the south side of Hance Lane to Wolf Creek.
Q: Will this park tie into the nature preserve?
A: There will be a blue trail (water trail) connecting the Graham Creek Nature Preserve and Wolf Creek Park. The paddle is 4 miles between the parks.
Q: Is there anything I’ve neglected to ask?
A: Hopefully, we will have a grand opening in October.
