FOLEY, Ala. - The Foley City Council approved Monday the city's participation in the 2011 Sales Tax Holiday.

The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 5 and ends midnight Aug. 7. The holiday happens during a weekend.

One council member said "it would hurt the (local) merchants" if the city does not participate in the holiday.

The Baldwin County Commission adopted a resolution in May which allows the exemption of Baldwin County sales and use tax for certain items such as school supplies, computers and clothing. Governments in the past few years have held a sales tax exemption during the first few weekends in August, coinciding with the beginning of the school year.
