FOLEY, Ala. - The Foley City Council mulled a decision to assist with sponsorship for the Foley Rotary Club's Fall Oyster Run due to some council member concerns about whether the city should sponsor one group's event if it will not grant other sponsorship requests.
Jeff Rouzie, a Rotary member, represented the group at the council work session Monday and requested a $1,000 sponsorship from the city for the annual event, which will be in its 19th year. The race will take place Nov. 12 at 8 a.m. in downtown Foley, with the race starting and finishing at the intersection of Alston Street and Orange Avenue.
"This is the Rotary's top fundraising event of the year," Rouzie said.
Councilman Ralph Hellmich questioned whether it was a good idea to grant the request and warned that other group's will make similar requests.
"Do we need to give all of them one equal amount," Hellmich asked the council.
The Foley Lions Club and Kiwanis Club were mentioned as similar groups that could make requests.
"You do something here and the other groups are upset at you," Hellmich said.
The council gave general support for the event but did not take any official action regarding the sponsorship request, and Councilman Charles Ebert III said the race is a benefit to the city because it "puts feet on the streets in downtown Foley."
