Foley doctor’s license suspended

Posted

FOLEY, Ala. — According to the Medical Licensure Commission of the State of Alabama, a Foley physician’s medical license has temporarily been suspended.

A commission report shows that Dr. Thomas R. Syverson of Syverson Medical Group in Foley was ordered to surrender his license after he was arrested in Florida.

“On June 11, 2012, Dr. Syverson was arrested in Escambia County, Fla. and charged with DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of Lyrica without a prescription and other misdemeanor charges,” the commission report states. “

However, neither Escambia County, Fla., nor Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department websites show any record of Syverson’s arrest.

But according to the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners’ report, following the arrest, Syerson then submitted to a drug test the following August at the request of the Florida Board of Medical Examiners, testing positive for benzodiazepines without a prescription. Subsequent tests in Alabama in September 2012 also resulted in positive traces of controlled substances, according to the commission report.

At the time of that evaluation, the report states, Syverson also withheld important information about his previous assessment in Florida, told conflicting stories to different counselors and facility employees and refused to cooperate with parts of the evaluation.

With those findings, last month the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners requested that Syverson’s medical license be suspended until a hearing could be held to consider the prominent revocation of that medical license.

That hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. April 17 at the offices of the Medical Licensure Commission in Montgomery.
