Mrs. Lester's all girls class did a project about volcanoes. Her students had to choose and build a model of a volcano using clay and plaster. They had to choose one of the three types of volcanoes which are composite, shield, and cinder cone volcanoes. They were supposed to learn the different types, shapes, and eruptions of volcanoes. The students made their volcanoes erupt by mixing vinegar, dish soap, and baking soda or Mentos and soda. They also added red food coloring. Mrs. Lester said many volcanoes were made realistic by adding rocks or grass. She said Alynn Myrick's volcano was the most realistic and Sandrae Jimmerson's volcano was the most decorative. All the students had a lot of fun building and presenting her projects.
At Foley Intermediate School we already have six students who have earned over three-hundred A.R. points. They are Carson Major with 321.9 points, Cruz Watkins with 359.3 points, Celeste Bryan with 365.9 points, Madison Nelson with 381.9 points, Alynn Myrick with 389.6 points, and in the lead is Magan Hare with 412.9 points. We asked Magan what was her favorite book she has read so far. She said Eragon by Christopher Paolini was her favorite book. It’s about a farm boy who finds a dragon egg. You should read the book to see what happens next.
At Foley Intermediate we had a Black History extravaganza at one o’clock on Tuesday, February 28th. Mr. Williams and the Peer Helpers designed the show themselves. They decided to make it into a talent show. First Mr. Williams explained about how Foley Intermediate was first an all black school. After that Chris Armstrong talked about the origin of the NAACP and how it changed segregation. Shelby Brown, Angel Walker, and Haley Dill did a dance routine. Then A’mya and Brianna Sewell sang "Man in the Mirror." Kaya Clanton read an essay about Whitney Houston and how she was a black pop-star in the 80’s. Norieaga Bodiford and Gregory Starr made and sang a rap called “I’m Going to Change.” Ashlie Jackson, Kaylee Nelson, Ciara Saunders, Allana Johnson, Maddy Davenport, and Makenzi Pitts did another dance routine. Then Jordan Thompson discussed about poet Langston Hughes. Edward Beck finished it off with singing "I Wanna Know." We all enjoyed the Black History Program very much!
