FOLEY, Alabama – The Foley Lady Lions swept the Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins 25-15, 25-23, 25-14 on Thursday at Foley High School.
Natasha Johnson had 14 kills and eight digs to lead the Lady Lions, who improved to 4-3 in head coach Wing Brett’s first season at Foley after leaving Gulf Shores this summer. Brett said he was happy to see Johnson, who he also coaches in sand volleyball away from school, step up as a leader in the win.
“These kids need a leader, and if (Natasha) wants to be that leader I’m happy with that,” Brett said. “She was gangbusters tonight. She is really, really a very talented player.”
Ashley Brokenshaw had 24 assists, Brittney Davis had seven kills and Amanda Brett eight digs in the win for the Lions. Foley had six team blocks in the win.
“Sometimes the stars align and the kids play really well,” Brett said. “They played inspired. We got on them early and stayed on them. We played hard, made some big plays.”
In Game 1, Gulf Shores opened with a 1-0 lead but Foley quickly grabbed a 2-1 lead and did not relinquish it. The second game was close, with Gulf Shores tying it at 18 then pulling within one point at 24-23. Foley started Game 3 on a 6-0 run and never trailed on the way to clinching the match.
“Tonight was a lot of fun," Brett said. "It’s been a long time since they’ve had that kind of feeling in here. I saw a lot of smiles tonight, it’s really fun.”
Both teams will play in the Fairhope High School Back to School Bash on Friday starting at 4 p.m.
