Foley Library celebrates banned books

FOLEY, Ala. — September is a busy month at the Foley Public Library with activities of interest for the entire family. The fun begins Thursday with the first installment of the Foley Public Library’s Fall Film Series. The showing of a classic film based on previously banned book will begin at 6 in the Library’s meeting room. Free popcorn and drinks will be provided and a DVD copy of the movie will be given away to one lucky participant.

Foley Public Library Director said the series will feature a different film the third Thursday of the month.

“We start off with a classic,” he said. “Then in October, the theme will be ‘A Movie So Bad it’s Good.’ In November, we’ll follow with a foreign film.”

In conjunction with the Fall Film Series the Foley Public Library will observe Banned Books Week Sunday, Sept. 21 through Saturday, Sept. 27. During the week the Library will have previously banned books wrapped in plain brown paper and placed in containers at the Circulation Desk. Only the genre of the book will be written on the outside of the brown wrapper with the contents held as a complete surprise. Patrons will be encouraged to check out a brown paper wrapped book as a means of focusing attention on the myriad classics that have faced a potential ban in the past.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24 the Library will again emphasize Banned Books Week through the Snapshot Day Alabama event. During that day the Library staff will take photos of willing patrons that check out one of our brown paper covered banned books as well as any patron who wishes to have their photo shared through the Alabama Public Library Service website and the Foley Public Library Facebook page. The library’s goals are to heighten awareness of the potential danger associated with banning books and its consequences in damaging First Amendment rights.

Then on at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, the library will host Quiz Night, in which four teams will fill up eight tables and compete to test their knowledge.

“The questions will consist of history, current events, science — something from virtually every genre,” Jackson said.

He added that participants will also be eligible for door prizes.

Teams can sign up or individuals can register and be placed in teams at the event.
