Foley Library readies for next week

FOLEY, Alabama — Foley Public Library has two back-to-back events slated for next week.

The first is author Sharon House presenting and signing copies of her historical fiction novel, “Brimstone and Water.” The free event is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5 and will feature the Colorado-based Snow Bird discussing her latest publication.

“She’ll talk about her research,” Foley Library Director Steve Horn said in an interview at the library.

That research is the foundation of the Tate Publishing book, which is a story taking a grieving Carolyn Davidson on a quest to honor her dearly departed grandfather to rest. Thus begins a journey to satisfy the longing for an ancient family connection.

Right on the heels of House’s appearance is the return of a yearly event, Friends of the Foley Public Library 2013 annual Book Sale at the Foley Civic Center. According to Horn, the three-day event will boast numerous books on various topics and genres, all acquired either from donation or close-out sales of book stores.

“There will be thousands of books lined wall to wall,” he said.

A preview sale, along with a wine and cheese party will be open only to Friends of the Library members 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7. Annual membership to Friends is $10 per person or $15 per family.

The public portion of the sale will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

Horn explained that proceeds from both Friends membership and next week’s book sale are tax-free.

“And every dime of it goes to help the library,” he said.

For instance, last year’s sale raised more than $6,000, which funded a third of programs and tools for the library.

“Well, $5,000 went to our summer-reading program, which brought in over 600 kids each Thursday,” Horn said.

He added that approximately $18,000 of fundraising also provided the library’s mobile app and the purchase of tables for the children’s area and computer lab last year, as well as a MacBook to enable library staff to assist students using Baldwin County Public Schools Renaissance Program.

“That’s a significant thing,” Horn said.
