FOLEY, Ala. – Foley rushed for over 260 yards in a 27-7 win over the Murphy Panthers on Friday.
The Lions (1-0) were led by running back Kalif Koen, who carried 31 times for 168 yards in a rain-soaked season opener.
"I don't have enough good things to say about him," Foley coach Todd Watson said of Koen's night. "Under these conditions you are limited to what you can do, so we got in there and told our offensive line and told Kalif, 'Listen boys, we are going to put the ball game on your shoulders.' And they responded."
Murphy scored on its second offensive play on a 20-yard Javon Slay pass to Jarvis Boone. Foley scored four unanswered touchdowns to close out the game.
"I was proud of the way after the score we came back, settled down and played really well," Watson said. "I thought our defense was flying around and made some big plays."
Foley got on the board late in the first quarter when senior quarterback Darius Powell connected with Bob Pugh for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Powell carried one yard on a bootleg for Foley's second score before the half.
The Lions intercepted Slay twice. Zach Hoyt snagged a pick near the end of the first half, and Caleb Autrey returned an interception 10 yards for a score in the third.
"Certainly Autrey's pick six was big for us," Watson said. "That kind of widened the gap a bit for us."
The Lions drove 71 yards on eight plays for their final score. Koen carried seven times for 54 yards, then D'Marsjae Casey scored on a 17-yard sweep for a touchdown.
Dre'Shon McGaster had two sacks for the Lions on defense.
