ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Foley Lions varsity football team improved to 2-0, dropping the Robertsdale Golden Bears to 0-2 in the 6A Region 2 opener for both teams in a 34-6 Lion victory.

After a sluggish start for both teams, ending in a 0-0 tie following the opening period, the Lions used a Bear miscue and a punt return to take a 10-0 lead early in the second and never looked back.

Following an interception by Demetrius McKinney Robertsdale was hoping to strike first, driving from their own 39-yard line, aided by a fake punt, and took the ball down to the Foley 5-yard line. But a lateral from quarterback Hunter Vaughn went behind running back Sammy Tolbert and by the time the Foley defense pounced on the ball, the Lions had the ball at their own 42.

A 33-yard pass from Maison Taylor to Demarcus Bingham was followed by a 16-yard run by Joseph Brister, bringing the ball to the Golden Bear 1. But Brister's run on first down lost four yards and the Lions had to fall on a fumble for just a three-yard gain on second and Taylor's pass on third down fell incomplete, leaving the ball at the Robertsdale 2.

Wyatt Hubbard booted an 18-yard fieldgoal from there to give the Lions the lead at 3-0 with 3:24 left in the second quarter.

Foley would make the score 10-0 just 42 seconds later. After three passes by the Bears fell incomplete, Kalif Koen took the ensuing punt near midfield and raced all the way into the endzone. Hubbard's extra point made the score 10-0 with 2:42 remaining in the half.

The Lions would add another score midway through the third period, again set up by a good punt return with Bob Pugh bringing the ball back to the Robertsdale 16. Two plays later, Koen punched it in from a yard out and Hubbard's kick made the score 17-0 with 6:41 remaining in the third.

Robertsdale appeared to gain new life on its ensuing drive when Vaughn connected with Tolbert for gains of six and 33 yards, sandwiched by a Lion penalty to the Foley 15. Another penalty gave the Bears a first-and-goal from the eight and two plays later, Vaughn took the ball in himself from five yards out. But the Bears point-after attempt was blocked, leaving the score at 17-6 with 4:23 to go in the third.

The Bears would get the ball back and drive down to the Lion 20, but could not capitalize with four straight passes falling incomplete to turn the ball over on downs. Five plays later Chasen Hadley intercepted Taylor, but the Bear offense netted just six yards.

Foley took the ensuing punt and drove 63 yards in just four plays, Koen rushing twice for 37 yards and Brister ran twcie for 36 yards including a 24-yard scamper for the score with Hubbard's extra pont chipped in for a 24-6 lead with 7:44 remaining in the period.

Foley added two more scores, blocking a Golden Bear punt attempt and running it in for the score with 6:06 remaining in the contest, then added a 17-yard fieldgoal with just 31.3 seconds showing on the clock to make the final score 34-6.

"We just played too sloppy in the first half," said Foley Head Coach Todd Watson. "Way too many penalties. There's a lot we've got to clean up. But it's good to get a win. Robertsdale has a good football team and to come over and get out of here with a win is definitely a positive for our team."

Koen and Brister combined for 225 rushing in the contest, Keon rushing 11 times for 113 yards and Brister piling up 112 yards on 11 rushes. After completing just 8 of 20 passes in the first half for 66 yards and an interception, Taylor completed 6 of 7 passes in the second for 60 yards.

Robertsdale gained just 23 yards on the ground in 23 carries. Vaughn completed 13 of 39 passes with two interceptions for 152 yards. Chandler Cordova completed a pass on a fake punt for a 12-yard gain.

Foley (2-0, 1-0) will host its first home game of the season next Friday night, taking on the top-ranked Daphne Trojans at Ivan Jones Stadium, while Robertsdale (0-2, 0-1) travel to Ladd-Peebles Stadium to take on the Williamson Lions (1-1, 1-0) who beat Satsuma 28-7 Friday night in Satsuma.
