FOLEY, Alabama - The Foley Lions built an early lead and held on late to beat the Gulf Shores Dolphins 33-20 in a preseason jamboree game at Ivan Jones Stadium on Friday.
Foley jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter on a 59-yard touchdown run from Cedrix Reed and a pair of touchdown passes from starting quarterback Maison Taylor to Demarcus Bingham in the first quarter.
Gulf Shores answered when Josh Frizzel recovered a Lion fumble at the Foley 2-yard-line and quarterback Colby Simmons connected with tight end Benjamin Taylor for a touchdown strike late in the second quarter. The Dolphins fought off a Foley threat later in the quarter when Jake Lorenz intercepted Foley's Hampton Howard deep in Dolphin territory to close out the first half.
Daniel Laborde scored a Gulf Shores touchdown on a 51-yard run on the Dolphins' first possession of the second half, then Shamon Campbell returned a Foley fumble 33 yards for another Dolphin touchdown. The extra point tied the game at 20.
"Any time you walk on the field and you see our bunch against that bunch you are going to be a little intimidated," Blackmon said. "I was really really proud of our kids because they settled down and played football. They went out and had fun, and that's all I asked them to do."
Foley bounced back with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Howard to Reed in the third quarter, followed by two field goals from Jose Mendoza to close out the win.
"The disappointing thing was that we were so sloppy in certain areas," Foley head coach Todd Watson said. "We put the ball on the ground too many times, had too many penalties. You can't do that and win consistently. We have got to eliminate those mistakes."
The Lions won despite losing two fumbles, two muffed punts and an interception.
"We have to polish it up and fix some of these problems before next Friday night," Watson said.
Frizzel had two fumble recoveries and a sack. Corey Cline also recovered a muffed punt for Gulf Shores.
"It is what it is, a jamboree scrimmage. But we got a lot of positive things coming out of this," Blackmon said.
Foley hosts Alma Bryant in the season opener next Friday night. The Dolphins open at home on Friday against Satsuma.
