Foley looks at reviving youth work program

Posted

FOLEY — A defunct Foley youth program could be revived in the near future, thanks to Foley resident Donna Boulder. During Monday’s regular meeting of the Foley City Council, Boulder asked the council for guidance on how to proceed with a program that would enable teenagers to be productive.

“We’re needing something for our you in the 13-15-year range,” she said.

Boulder explained that a program once existed in the Forward City that enabled that demographic to do light jobs and earn pay.

“The Cetar Program offered them jobs,” she said.

Boulder explained that due to the delicacy of child-labor laws and the targeted ages, jobs were limited in hours and to extremely light tasks. However, she said, the program has not existed in Foley for more than 10 years. Boulder told the council that such a program needs to be brought back.

“They’re (teenagers) too old for daycare,” she said. “They’re too young to get jobs. But, they’re old enough to get into trouble.”

Boulder said she has already begun with efforts to initiate filling that void.

“I’ve written a proposal,” she told the council. “But now, where do I start?”

Council members said they were in favor of the idea and agreed to look into how to help Boulder initiate the program.

“We will find a way,” Foley Mayor John Koniar told her.

Also Monday, the council:

* Approved resolutions to set public hearing declaring weeds to be a nuisance at Pebble Creek Subdivision, 55 vacant lots and Fulton Place Subdivision, 99 vacant lots. n Approved a resolution for Residential Sanitation write-offs in the amount of $413.62 for a 120-day period.

* Approved South Baldwin Coin Society President James Duffy’s request to waive kitchen fees for the Gold Coast Coin Show Aug. 10-12, enabling the group to use the serving line to provide a place to put food for members and dealers.

* Approved funding for South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

* Approved the first reading of the city’s participation in the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday and Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. With the pending second reading and vote, the city won’t have to continue voting on the matter each year.
