MOBILE – The Davidson Warriors completed a two-point conversion play in double-overtime to defeat the Foley Lions 28-27 in a Class 6A first round playoff game on Thursday night.
After Foley scored on a one yard run by Marcus Washington to start the second overtime period, Davidson quarterback Jerrell Smith hit on a fade route for a nine yard score. Smith got the winning two-point conversion on the following play.
“That was just a great play by their receiver,” Foley coach Todd Watson said of the two-point score. “We had it covered, but the guy made a great catch. They had two great plays there. My hat goes off to them.”
In the first overtime period Darien Craig scored for Davidson, then Foley quarterback Darius Powell answered with an eight yard touchdown run.
The teams were tied at 13 at the end of regulation.
Davidson dominated the first quarter, running 18 plays to just four for Foley. The Warriors opened the game with a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Smith completed 4-of-5 passes for 32 yards and rushed five times for 47 yards and a score on the drive.
After forcing Foley into a three-and-out, Davidson drove 86 yards and Smith scored on a 36 yard run on the second play of the second quarter.
Foley got its offense going on the ensuing drive, taking the ball 71 yards in 17 plays capped by a field goal from Jorge Santa Maria.
Davidson led 13-3 at the break. Smith finished the first half with 11 rushes for 112 yards and two touchdowns and 50 yards passing.
Foley got another field goal from Santa Maria on its first possession of the second half, cutting Davidson’s lead to 13-6.
Smith fumbled on third-and-short on Davidson’s next possession and Foley’s Crishun Adams fell on it at the Warrior 31. Washington scored four plays later on a two-yard run and Santa Maria’s extra point tied the game at 13.
Davidson missed two field goals in the second half.
“This was just a great high school football game,” Watson said. “You just hate that anyone had to lose it.
“I am proud of our kids and the way they adjusted to what Davidson was doing in the first half. We had to make some tough adjustments, and our guys handled them extremely well.”
Foley finished the season with a 5-6 record.
